The challenge

My goal was to create a digital storytelling experience that would bring clarity, human connection, and increased viewer engagement to an underreported, yet vital, news story.

The solution

Utilizing the unique strengths of the Tapstory format, I crafted a multi-dimensional presentation for PBS NewsHour. This design interweaves the following elements:

  • Powerful imagery: Carefully curated photographs and maps add impactful visual context to the written narrative.
  • Informative text: Research-driven writing distills complex facts into concise, accessible segments.
  • Embedded video: Short, documentary-style video clips from PBS NewsHour offer direct witness accounts and perspectives, deepening the emotional impact of the story.

Technical implementation

To bring this multifaceted Tapstory to life, I relied primarily on JavaScript and CSS. The project leverages smooth transitions between text, images, and video components, with responsive design optimized across desktops, tablets, and smartphones.

Portfolio impact

This project demonstrates my skill in harnessing web development to amplify critical journalism. It illustrates a commitment to crafting user-centered digital experiences and a belief in technology's ability to spark empathy and drive positive action.
